It’s well-documented that the Great Barrier Reef, one of Earth’s most iconic natural wonders, is under threat from climate change, pollution, and other environmental factors. However, there’s hope on the horizon, thanks to non-profits such as the Great Barrier Reef Legacy (GBRL) and their initiative, ‘The Forever Reef Project,’ developed to preserve and restore this remarkable ecosystem.
The GBRL is a non-profit organisation committed to the conservation and restoration of the Great Barrier Reef. Led by Dr. Dean Miller, a marine biologist, filmmaker, and photographer, Dean is dedicated to the conservation of coral reefs worldwide with an array of innovative projects.
The GBRL focuses on scientific research, education, and raising awareness about the reef’s plight. Their latest Forever Reef project is a ground-breaking initiative to collect living specimens of the world’s coral species and preserve them in a living ‘coral ark’ to protect coral biodiversity forever.
Coral reef ecosystems produce 50-80% of our oxygen through ocean plankton and photosynthesizing bacteria. If the ocean suffers, so do we. Coral reefs support economies through coastal protection, fishing, and tourism. Their decline affects local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, vendors, and tour guides.
Climate change is the greatest threat to coral reefs, causing extreme weather events and ocean acidification. Ocean warming is expected to increase by 0.5°C over the next 30 years, leading to more frequent bleaching events and cyclones, resulting in coral and species loss.
